ARA DEG 2021
Gruff Rhys and Neuadd Ogwen have worked together on a long weekend of events. An imperfect experiment of course, but we hope that some small detail from one of these events will inspire you in a long lasting way.
Equally we hope that the audience and Dyffryn Ogwen in general will inspire the artists back.

GRUFF Rhys
Loan Your Loneliness is Gruff’s latest album and special guests from the album will appear on stage.
With a hand in over twenty albums there should be plenty of other songs to choose from too.
Filmed in Bethesda by Steve Bliss for the ARA DEG 2020 sessions.
JOHN FRANCIS FLYNN
John Francis Flynn is a singer and multi-instrumentalist whose work centres around traditionaland folk material from Ireland.
He is a founding member of the band, Skipper’s Alley, with whom he has toured extensively throughout Europe and America.
Friday 27th AUGUST
Brìghde Chaimbeul
Brìghde Chaimbeul is a radical piper from Scotland. Embracing the drone and enriching her tradition by cultivating informal aspects and experimenting with, for example, Eastern European influences.
She released her first album, The Reeling in 2019 on Rough Trade Records.
Filmed in Bethesda by Steve Bliss for the ARA DEG 2020 sessions.
Gwenifer Raymond
Guitarist Gwenifer Raymond hails from the slopes of Garth Mountain near Cardiff, as the title of her latest album, Strange Lights Over Garth Mountain suggests.
Now living in Brighton her fingerpicking style, influenced by her upbringing on punk records, Appalachian folk and the rawer non-conformist side American guitar tradition in general has brought her records to worldwide attention.
Her first LP You Never Were Much A Dancer was released on the esteemed Tompkins square label in 2018
Cerys Hafana
Using the triple harp nods to the traditional music of Wales but her production is starkly universal and speaks directly and honestly to our worrisome age by channeling the past and creating new forms.
Her debut album Cwmwl is available on all known streams.
Filmed in Bethesda by Steve Bliss for the ARA DEG 2020 sessions.
SATURDAY 28th AUGUST
GWENNO
Gwenno has revolutionized Welsh pop music over the last decade, shifting the direction of our popular culture towards the nourishing shores of the future rather than the deathly dead end backdrops of the past.
Creating potent medicines on two albums, Y Dydd Olaf and Le Kov, from an unlikely recipe of the Cornish and Welsh languages, Radical Politics, the Digital and the traditional. Both classics of our age
Islet
Islet from Powys are probably one of the best live groups in the whole Universe (this is hard to quantify obviously – but I’ll bet you my bike and stereo system). They break every rule that denotes the usual relationship of the ‘performers’ and the ‘Audience’ while showering a sonic wave of positivity over their comrades in the crowd.
Their third album ‘Eylet’ was released on the incredible Fire Records label last year and was named album of the year by the Welsh Arts Review.
PYS MELYN
It is a privilege to invite Pys Melyn (Yellow Peas) back to Bethesda – all the way from Nefyn (though their heart may be in Lagos and their musical talents may be typical of LA studio musicians from the seventies and that same city’s hip-hop of the teenage years of this century.
This is one of the most adventurous and skillful groups that sing in Welsh – their new album Bywyd Llonydd is a sunny sampldelic masterpiece.
